The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – The Legend Ends...Sort Of...

Halfway through Christopher Nolan’s hysterically anticipated final installment of the Dark Knight trilogy, I couldn’t help thinking of Dr Evil from Austin Powers:  “Let’s just do what we always do, hijack some nuclear weapons and hold the world to ransom.”

For all Nolan’s gloomy revisionism, rebooting Batman for a post 9/11 audience, that’s essentially what the plot boils down to: hulking villain Bane (Tom Hardy) wants to liberate Gotham City from the decadent, complacent fat cats skimming off the top and give it back to the people.  And then blow it up with a nuclear weapon fashioned from Bruce Wayne’s fancy new green energy fission reactor.

No matter how sophisticated the super-villain or dastardly the plan, screenwriters still reach for the nukes to convey the ultimate terror.

The Dark Knight Rises is a meaty, engrossing barnstormer of a conclusion to Nolan’s caped crusader legend.  Inevitably, it suffers in comparison to The Dark Knight – long-winded and confusing, jammed with extra characters and last-minute exposition, its central villain Bane a prosaic presence after the mercurial Joker.  If Nolan was a cash-in merchant, he could’ve justified splitting his finale over two parts, like Harry Potter or Twilight.
