Once, in a rare display of self-discipline, Jasper Howland chose to spend his night off in a different way, away from the riotous, carousing night life that had always drawn him in like a babe to a bosom. It was the night his life started to work for the first time, really.
Jasper had been stranded on Elginia for six months, trying without success to make it back home to Earth. Standing outside the spaceport terminal for the twenty-seventh time, disappointed again, he looked up at Elginia's starry night sky and sighed in angry frustration. He dropped his zolaphone case to the ground, and the strings of the musical instrument vibrated in jangling protest.
