A Guide for Providing Pet Therapy with Your Miniature Horse
Susan B. Binsfeld
I have been involved in Pet Therapy since 2006.
At the suggestion of a friend, I started taking my cat, Lizzie, to visit patients at a Green Bay nursing home. I can be a bit of a talker, so I mentioned to them that I have horses. I offered to bring them to see the residents. I made this venture four times with them, and four of my friends in tow to assist. We had a great time.
After two years at the nursing home, one of the therapists told me that I needed to share Lizzie with more people. I pursued opportunities in Pet Therapy at one of Green Bay's local hospitals. Aurora Bay Care Medical Center started its Pet Therapy program when the hospital opened its doors in 2001. Today there are twenty-five dogs, two cats (mine), and my miniature horse in the program. It is the largest Pet Therapy program in Wisconsin, possibly in the United States.
