I used to think that if I worked at night and slept during the day I'd never have another nightmare. After all, isn't it in the darkness that fear starts? The unknown, the hidden; don't they find refuge in the darkness?
It didn't happen that way, of course. I still had nightmares; the difference was that they were easier to dispel if I woke to light instead of to a darkened room, because switching on a lamp was never enough; the darkness was still outside, still a threat. But if daylight was streaming in my windows the nightmare instantly receded and I could close my eyes again, and drift back into sleep with scarcely a thought for what had awakened me.
