A Silver Ring
My father had a silver ring. He got it during World War II and he had a story about it.
My father grew up on a farm in Southern Idaho. His father came to America from the Black Sea region of Ukraine, then under Russian control, with a wave of immigrants called the Black Sea Germans forty years before World War II.
At eighteen my father wanted to join the Army but my grandfather wouldn't allow it. Grandpa repeatedly kept him out of the war by going to the draft board and explaining that the family needed him on the farm. Well, of course they did need him to do farm work, and that was a way to get out of military service at the time. My grandfather might have had several motives. His German heritage might have made him want to keep his son from fighting against the fatherland, for one, and there was another more complex reason.
