Three horses. Three riders: two knights Hospitaller and a squire. They raised a cloud of dust as they raced ahead of the pursuing Muhammadan warriors in deadly pursuit. The ruse to draw away the warriors from the Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land had worked. Too well. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was not always the most hospitable of lands.
“Still glad you left your libraries?” asked Baldrad. He was one of the knights Hospitaller and he was wounded. The hand of his sword arm rested as best it could in his lap as his horse raced along besides Jevan's. Blood still seeped down his arm to coat his hand.
“I don't miss the paper cuts,” said Jevan.
The squire, Otho, laughed.
“And what's the use of reading about the history of the world if you don't get to see some of it,” Jevan added.
