The Taming of Man I

Cysgod Mawr limped through the smouldering terrain. In the blink of an eye, her entire pack had been destroyed. That she alone escaped was a cruel twist of fate. She was young, an Alpha female newly made. Now, she was wounded and friendless.

The enormous Black Hound turned her sleek muzzle skyward and howled. Were there any other hounds around, even her smaller kin, wolves, they would answer. No dog of any kind could resist the call of a Black Hound.

Cysgod Mawr growled and limped a few steps before stopping. A high-pitched wail pierced the grey-brown skies. The Black Hound shook her coat, ash falling everywhere. It was an exercise in futility. Ash was still raining from the sky.

The wail sounded again. Cysgod Mawr could not contain her curiosity and she trotted in uneven steps towards the sound. The smell of blood assaulted her nostrils. It was thick and rank, detectable even through the dense cloud of ash rain.
