The Dying God

Stop! Thief!” the baker hollered as she shot down the street. She tucked the loaf of bread, still warm from the ovens, close to her tiny, underfed frame as she dodged around merchant and patron alike in the market.

Shouts rumbled through the crowd, and bodies started pressing in on her, hands reaching out to grab her. The baker’s two sons had given chase and were gaining, fast. Scrawny though she might be, the girl was clever and she spun and weaved like a dancer as she moved effortlessly through the crowd. Until…


The sound was deafening to her as she flew bodily into a captain of the City Guard. The force of the impact threw her backward. She landed painfully onto her back. The wind was knocked violently from her lungs as she landed.
