The Sound and the Philpott

by Jamie McNabb

I told my shrink that when it comes to my mother, the first sound I can remember was her telling me about the approach lights to the communal airstrip up in the Adirondacks. While my father landed our ornithopter, she lovingly explained what the colors meant and what each set of lights did. She pointed out how the people in the control tower were there to ensure we landed safely. They were flesh and blood people, not androids. I was warm and snug, and I felt safe.
