Chapter One

“Yesterday’s Whine”

A rush of red-tailed sparks caught Ted’s attention and then the loud pop quickly followed. Ted had pushed a cart full of empty, blood-soaked cardboard boxes through the pair of metal swinging doors that was the official boundary between the customer shoppers and the employees’ backroom at Foshee’s Supermarket. Ted had just finished one of his chores of putting out whole chicken fryers in the meat department and was ready for a break. Little had he expected to have a bottle rocket shot in his direction, but after a quick pause for thought, no, he wasn’t surprised after all. That just meant Hef was in the back room already. Hef was the second-ranking bagboy at Foshee’s.
