Seven years ago, I sat on the flight deck of an Australian frigate, gazing over the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.
I had just met someone a few months earlier and was beginning to wish I was with her more often than my career allowed.
My navy career had been a growing experience for me, to be sure, but it was gladly coming to a close.
During my many hours at sea, I began to write the following story. Whether it was inspired by my new girlfriend (who I’m now proud to be married to) or whether it came from my great love for J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, I am still not sure, or maybe it is a combination of both. Nevertheless I grew to like this simple story as it took form over the following years.
