Conflict- The conflicts in the story all deal with the plays heroes particularly Beowulf defeating various beasts. The first being Grendel, followed by his mother seeking vengeance, and lastly the dragon whom is furious someone stole from him.

Interesting Details


The manuscript of the poem was nearly lost in a fire in the 1700’s, and following the poem went into obscurity for a very long time before reemerging in print in the 1800’s.


It is up to debate that Beowulf was originally an oral story, as many scholars believe that due to the way the poem was written that it was more so an attempt to finally write down the famous Norse tale.


In 2007 Beowulf was adapted to film as a major Hollywood production, the film itself even starred Angelina Jolie who played Grendel’s mother, and Ray Winstone as Beowulf.


Book Summary

The poem tells of a great hero Beowulf. Beowulf a valiant warrior from Geatland takes a group of brave men to help out the allied Danes when an evil monster Grendel terrorizes them. Grendel has been murdering and devouring a great number of Danes and Beowulf seems to be the only man that is able to help. After a dangerous battle with both Grendel and Grendel’s mother, Beowulf returns home to Geats victorious. Once back in Geatland Beowulf becomes a great ruler of the land for more than fifty years. Near the end of his reign as king a dragon threatens Geatland and Beowulf must once again take up his sword and play hero. Beowulf is victorious again defeating the dragon however his is fatally wounded in the process. Beowulf passes on his kingdom to a young and very brave man, Wiglaf. Beowulf is forever remembered as a hero for his great feats of bravery and strength.
