As though I needed another reminder of the turbulent motions in my heart valves, Jamie intensifies her squeeze around my waist and drones, “Wow. That thing is really pumping.” She leans her head against my back and inhales a whiff of the cologne Angie gave me last night—an early birthday present. Due to our dangerous adventures, our life expectancy has become greatly reduced; rather, unknown.
