Maurice DeMouse was sound asleep in his mousehole when he was awakened by the pounding of a hammer: BANG! BANG! BANG!

After he yawned, he wiped the sleep from his tiny mouse eyes, stretched his little mouse legs, shook his body, and wiggled his skinny little mouse tail - like he did every morning when he woke up.

Wicky-Wacky-Whoa! I’m ready to go!” said Maurice.

As Maurice crawled out from his mousehole in the fire logs, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

It was b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. It was the largest mousehole Maurice had ever seen. Could it be a castle for a mouse? It wasn’t as large as the castle where his friend Cassie and her family lived; but, it would make a beautiful castle for the little mouse and his friends.

As quick as his little mouse legs would carry him, Maurice scurried to the vegetable garden where he met his friends for breakfast every morning. He couldn’t wait to tell them about his discovery.

When he arrived, Bobby the Bunny was chomping on a carrot and Maureen was gobbling up her favorite meal: ants and ladybugs. But, Maurice ran so fast that he could hardly squeak!

In a nearby tree, Squeaky the Squirrel had been munching on a few nuts when he heard all the commotion. The excited squirrel flew down the tree and headed for the vegetable garden where all the critters were anxiously waiting for Maurice to speak.
