As I sat down on my bed, I thought about life as I knew it. It isn't the same now. Things have changed. People have changed. War has risen and whatever was left of the old world has shrivelled up and become a faraway memory. I did not know what I was to become. My name is Adelphie Montalavo and this the story of what changed me forever.

I woke up to the sound of gunshots and the smell of smoke in the air. I could hear the screams of parents trying to protect their children and I shuddered as the image of bodies lying on the ground filled my mind. I shook out the vision and put on my dressing gown and slippers. Not many people could afford these luxuries any more, the enemy killed you if you owned anything that was theirs. I kept my things in a box, hidden under floorboard. They were things left of my old life and I would keep them safe until my dying day.

The enemy was becoming stronger everyday and I knew I would have to fight. I was not afraid to die, I was afraid to see others die because I could not save them. Stepping into the shadows outside my front door, all I could see was the haze from bombs and silhouettes darting in and out of the ruins of buildings from long ago. I saw someone coming closer and realised they had a gun. I began to walk away but the man shoved the weapon into my hand and said “Run!” That one word was what motivated me to face my fear and help save my country.
