The repetitive clanking of picks and trowels rattled through the brutally dry desert air. Word had come from a village about a hundred miles out of a massive sand storm headed toward the excavation site and it made Jacob nervous. He tossed down the wooden handle of his brush and looked up to the still-blue sky from where he was crouched. There wasn’t even the slightest sign of the wall of sand that was coming. It made it easy to see how the people who once lived where he was standing could have ever been caught so off guard.

He licked his lips and sighed.

Ellie?”

A young woman a few feet away looked at him over her shoulder, “Yeah?”

Let’s start wrapping things up today. Get the tarps out and have everyone weigh them down well. There’s a strong wind coming from the North.”
