In the Prism world below Earth’s surface, winter began its descent in the cold foothills of the high western mountains. The light in the evening sky changed from bright orange to brilliant hues of turquoise blue and emerald green.
Groups of travelers, seeking a new home, gathered near a roaring bonfire. Men, women, and children, mostly dressed in raggedy clothes, huddled for warmth against the cold night air. The youngest children nestled in the arms of their parents, while others, mostly orphans, brothers and sisters, and strangers, held one another tightly.
An old man, with long silvery gray hair and a long beard, which flowed onto his chest, began to unfold his story in a serious and soothing voice. His words seemed magical, and his eyes glowed in the firelight. As he began to speak, it became so quiet that one could hear a twig snap in the distance, and younger children were so entranced that they flinched when burning logs crackled and popped loudly in the flames.
