A WEEK IN HONG KONG
A Travel Companion

INTRODUCTION

What do visitors to Hong Kong see and do? It is easy to make a list of the conventional options - the Peak Tram, Aberdeen with its floating village, Stanley Market, the Star Ferry, myriad shopping outlets and luxurious hotels, and food. And more shopping. All worthwhile in their different ways, but there is more to this place than shops and lacquered duck. It is not just a forest of skyscrapers clustered around a tropical harbour – it has a remarkable history, even if most of it has been submerged beneath the weight of commerce. And although it would be perfectly possible to come and go without realising it, beyond the urban crush is abundant countryside.
