The Pilot

He had flown many missions over Germany in the last several years of the war. He had participated in bombing raids on the military targets so frequently that he felt like he could find them in his sleep. But suddenly, their destinations had changed. Just last month he had flown in the mission to bomb Dresden. Bombing Dresden had not brought him the same satisfaction of the earlier missions, and he wondered about their current destination. But he would not allow himself to think of the people that would be located in Wuerzburg when they arrived in just a few hours. He had to focus on doing his job, on flying his plane, and staying in formation. Greater minds than his were responsible for deciding on the targets.

The Mother

It had been a long day and she wanted desperately to finish working and head home. With her husband off serving their country in the military and the children working odd jobs after school to bring in extra money, she was primarily running the bakery alone. She stood her broom up in the corner and looked around. She would be here very early in the morning to start the ovens, and everything else could wait until then. As she hung her apron on a nail she wondered if the kids had made it home yet.
