One, two, three, four … my head bounced off of the red-brick wall. Two men had grabbed me suddenly from behind on that street in North Philly after midnight and pushed me up against the falling-down, decrepit row house. Then they proceeded to play upright basketball with my noggin with a ferocity I could never have imagined. Why my head was being smashed into the wall over and over I knew immediately. I had come to find her. She was gone and I had come to find her in the middle of the slum after midnight. I didn't question that I deserved what I was getting, as my head bounced again and again off the bricks.
