By that point, I wasn’t even sure how long I had been there, lingering in the darkness and waiting for my turn. The black around me was surreal and, yet, so powerful that it enhanced all of my other senses. I could hear acutely the sounds of the chains that softly clattered together just above my head; the same chains that kept my already bruised wrists bound together. The cool touch of the steel would send chills through my spine every time that I twisted. From somewhere beyond, the sounds of whimpers and whispers echoed through my spinning head as I hung there, suspended like a child’s play-thing. The pungent scent of sweat, blood and cheap incense flooded my nose like a tsunami and made my lungs spasm in protest with every labored breath that I took.

I waited. An hour? A month? A year? I’m still not sure.
