February was always wet and gray, with streets muddy from melting snow. But one particular day the winds brought in warmth and the sun chose to shine. I was an awkward twelve years old. A small skinny girl with dark, brown hair that fell loose to my shoulder. I was just let out of school for the day, and glad I had my bicycle and could enjoy the weather on my way home.

I had just turned the corner by the park when the stray German Shepherd dog that lived there bounded out from the trees and toward me. I knew the dog from summers spent at the park and I wasn't frightened by it. I just tried to keep my school uniform out of reach of his dirty paws.

When I think of it now, I must have heard the car behind me, but I didn't notice it until it sped up to pass me. It happened so quickly I didn't have time to scream as the dog ran in front of the car. He yelped once as the tire broke him.
