The Witch’s Curse

No one ever came this way, and that was fine by me. I’d been walking this way between my new school and my new home all week and had never seen a soul in the whole expanse of the woods. It was quiet. Eerie quiet, like it was forgotten. Or avoided. I didn’t mind. It was peaceful, and I already had a favourite tree. It looked like the oldest tree in the forest. I couldn’t help but stare as I walked slowly past, its trunk stretched upward for what could easily be ten metres above the rest, the branches reaching out over everything within sight, crisp orange, red and brown leaves dropping slowly, carried by the wind onto the branches of the smaller trees around it, and then taking a few of those trees’ leaves with it to the forest floor.
