She probably should have stayed in bed. It might have been better to remain under the protection of the warm comfort of the sheets, and let the early autumn morning get on by itself without any participation in it. The unusual darkness of the early part of the day created shadows where there shouldn’t normally be shadows. Indoors, the house had needed the assistance of the electric light for longer than usual. There hadn’t been much of a summer this year and, today, it was an early reminder that short days and winter, woolly jumpers and big heating bills, were on their way.
