One fine day in the West Village Shel Silverstein walked right past me! He was my idol. Everyone said I wrote just like him. I desperately wanted to talk to him. It was the chance of a lifetime.

By the time I caught up with him my heart was pounding. I must have looked like I was ready to pass out because he got me a cup of coffee and waited to make sure I was all right. I started pulling napkins and pieces of paper from my pockets, showing him poems and songs I’d scribbled.

He loved my work. He laughed! He told me to go for it because I had the gift. Was he right? You be the judge. Here’s to you, Shel Silverstein, wherever you may be.
