Chapter 1

When the universe unapologetically introduces you to the perfect man at any tender age and then removes him from your reach almost instantly, it is highly improbable that the next many years will pass in romantic bliss. You will compare and contrast and always unfavorably to the man who comes after.

Nineteen: that was when Julie met Ryan. He was standing in her doorway the first time she laid eyes on him, looking like a ray of golden sunshine beaming down from a Michaelangelo heaven. He and his best friend, Josh, had arrived at her college dorm. They were here to visit Cynthia, her roommate. Julie had already (and for some time) heard all about them. She had fully expected to be impressed, to be pleased, to have fun, to like them immensely. She had not expected to feel the earth shake. One look at Ryan and she was smitten. You know the feeling. For some reason a sudden rush of “oh my god” surges through your body. Your mouth falls open slightly and your eyes glaze over. There’s no rhyme or reason. He’s not necessarily the most beautiful boy you’ve ever seen, but there’s something about him, him in particular, that rocks your world. Maybe it’s the way his dark curls frame his face or his blond Mohawk spiking up with imperfect symmetry. Perhaps it’s his lanky form, or wide shoulders; maybe it’s the small gap between his front teeth when he smiles, or maybe it’s all in a scent, an unrecognized smell that you don’t even know is there—who can say. It happens so fast and without warning.
