The Cotswolds – not just a pretty place
This book does not try to be all things to all people. It is not a compendium but an insight into a region that suffers from a reputation for prettiness, as if it were born quaint. Its undeniable beauty is not the creation of marketing departments but the product of the centuries – a cycle of prosperity, decline, poverty, and revival. That it has become associated only with a twee version of Englishness is regrettable and reflects badly on our curiosity and on our sense of history.
The fact is that the Cotswolds are beautiful. They have a unique harmony the essence of which is a natural landscape shaped and, usually, enhanced by man. This guidebook tries to give the information that explains how that came about.
