The Heart of the Beast

The phone rang in the darkness, breaking the quiet of the night like a baby in desperate need to be fed, or a forlorn lover who wanted in. It went on for a while, until someone picked up.

Captain Sanders?” a sharp voice that didn’t mind the time asked.

“Who is this?”

You don’t know me, but I know you, Captain. I need to talk to you about something, but not on the phone. Can we meet? I’m at the café at the corner of the block—it’s open all night. Can you join me now?

“What time is it?”

It’s five in the morning.
