I stood there next to Bogdan, both of us quiet and contemplative, gazing down at the scene before us, endless fields of waving green fading off into the darkening twilight. I had told him, finally and with much trepidation, of my plan to write a guidebook about his country.
Finally, he cleared his throat and patted me on the back and said, “Romania este o tara frumoasa. E un pacat ca sunt locuitori”.
Through a complicated series of concatenating events, I found myself on a plane headed for Romania in the spring of 2000. At the time, I spoke only one word of Romanian and not only did nobody know I was coming but I also had no idea where I was going.
Somehow, I made it. I had a wonderful and surprisingly fabulous time and over the next few years, continued to visit until finally one day I decided to move here. Despite the fact that I was born and raised in the United States, I now consider Romania my home.
Although I have been traveling and living in various countries all over the world since my childhood, Romania was quite an overwhelming experience to me, especially coming into it as unprepared as I was all those years ago.
It took me 10 long years to learn to speak Romanian well enough to pass for a native but the effort was worth it as it opened many doors that remain shut to outsiders.
