In the hundredth year of the war, Marlene asked, “Why?”

She was ten at the time, smart-mouthed and clever for her age. Questioning all the wrong things, and seeming unable to do as she was told. She drove her teachers crazy, and kept her parents up nights, worrying about what would become of her.

These weren’t the times for someone like that. There was a war on, after all.
