Long ago, there lived an 11-year-old boy, George, with his mother in a small hut. They were poor but they had plenty to eat. George helped his mother to till the ground and plant corn in their small plot of land. Sometimes, they would plant barley and sometimes wheat. Every day, George carried buckets of water from the creek and watered the crop.
When harvest time drew near, birds came to eat the ripe grain. His dog, Barney, barked excitedly at them. George made a scarecrow to scare the birds away. At night, small mice appeared and climbed on the stalks and ate the grain. George kept a cat to chase away the mice.
George helped his mother built a hen house to keep chickens. He took care of them by feeding them with dried corn and husks of grain. Every day, he brought fresh water for the chickens. In return, the chickens laid eggs and when the eggs hatched, little chicks came out. But there were snakes that crept into the hen house and ate the little chicks. George put up fencing around the yard to prevent snakes and other predators from eating the chickens.
