Ghost Country: A Novel

Off the Reservation

(Summer—1969)

I’m in love with John Lennon. I watch him on television every night. The good thing about people thinking he’s crazy is that he’s always on television. I just keep turning the dial until I find him. I love to hear that man talk about peace and love. I don’t even mind that he married that Yoko Ono; he only did it because he’s never met me.

My sisters hate it when I hog the television just to watch the same clip of Mr. Lennon over and over again on the different networks. Ama, who thinks she’s hot stuff just because she’s going to be a senior in high school, says they should deport him. I’m pretty sure she says stuff like that just to annoy me so I try to ignore her.
