Midnight Burgers, wedged between a morning donut shop and a cellphone service store, flashes with Christmas tree lights that frame the doorway and large window. The modest appearance utilizes its available outside space with a few metal tables and chairs. The door opens to display balloons kissing the ceiling, a banner on the back wall with the inscription, “25 years – Midnight Burgers,” and Larry, the owner, blowing up a balloon by the register. A favorite with the regulars, he greets each person by name.
A family of four enters, the son and daughter mesmerized by the many colored balloons. Larry walks over to them and points to the strings that graze his curly, graying head.
“What color balloon do you want?” he asks five year old Julie. He turns to her eight year old brother. “And how about you, Charlie?”
