The Shiny House
By Trevor Mountney
If you have ever become lost on the way to a fireworks show, during which you planned to propose to your girlfriend, and found yourself driving into a dark farmyard in which sat a big old house with no lights on, then you know how Tom and Ella felt as they rode their bikes into the Humphrys/Hewlett farmyard and gazed upon the 123-year-old house, which was no longer occupied.
“Wow, that is a big old house,” Ella said as they got off their bikes. Ella was 12, and she liked to express herself by pointing out the obvious.
“It sure is,” agreed Tom, who really didn't like expressing himself at all. Oh, and he was also 12.
