Finally time to stop running?
Or maybe not?
"A mystery?" she gave a wry smile. "You mean like who you are?" Although she didn't know his name, she had seen him around campus, normally in the vicinity of the history department. He was even better looking up close.
"Oh! Very sorry," he had the grace to look abashed but lost none of his good humor. The effect was all the more charming. "I'm Nicholas Romanov, new to the history department."
Casting a last longing look at her computer, Alex swiveled her chair around and stood to shake his hand. "Welcome to Smithton University. Is it Professor Romanov?" He startled her by kissing hers instead of shaking it. What surprised her even more was that, somehow, he pulled off the old-world mannerism without seeming to be silly or affected.
He released her hand but effortlessly continued to hold her gaze. "No. I mean, yes, but please just 'Nick'. I feel like an old geezer when people call me 'Professor'."
Oh, he was a charmer, the likes of which she hadn't seen in a very long time. Alex's nod was noncommittal, but she found herself grinning back at him. "And since you evidently know who I am, what mystery are you looking to solve?" She glanced at the paper then looked at it more closely. "Ah, yes, the infamous sculpture," her smile turned dry again. "Quite a likeness, isn't it? Pretty amazing."
