The German economy was a mess, and, in part, it was the result of a deliberate policy by the Weimar government following the end of the First World War, and yet, to many there seemed no sense in it. To the government, perhaps, it did make sense. After all, when being forced by Britain and France to continue to pay compensation for the First World War, what better strategy could there be than to make the payments they had already made not worth the paper they were printed on? Hyperinflation reached its worst in 1923, with the value of the currency declining daily.
