Clara awoke gasping for breath. Wherever she was, it was dark and cold. Her eyes felt as if they were welded shut. She tried to rub them, but her arms were tied fast to her sides. She tried to move her legs with the same result. She was trapped. She shivered with dread. A tingle started at her toes and rushed up her body like a thousand tiny needles. A rush of panic flowed through her. Her heart beat so hard it felt as if it pounded in her throat. She began to struggle, thrashing from side to side to loosen the invisible grip on her. A sinister laugh broke the silence, echoing around the unseen walls. Whatever was laughing was enjoying the situation. But its merriment was short-lived and its laughter became a blood-curdling screech. At the same moment, a wave of warmth flowed over Clara. Her body was free from its restraints. She opened her eyes slowly. She wiggled her fingers and stretched her arms to insure they were truly free. Although the light was dim and her vision blurred, she knew exactly where she was.
