This book is dedicated to my parents, Jim and Olga Stenhouse, both now passed, from whom I ‘inherited’ a love of family and local history. Parramatta evolved from convict beginnings, with squalid conditions, to become a major city in its own right, with historical buildings still there to be seen today. It’s my birthplace, my home town.
Elizabeth’s stomach heaved as the convict ship battled through the swell and dip of the Southern Ocean. Around her, other women were being sick into buckets, some shared, or over the deck, where it slopped about amongst their feet. The ship was being thrown from side to side, up and down, almost sailing in a circular or spiral motion forward as the strong winds and waves competed to try to destroy it.
