KATE opened the back door, shielding her eyes from the sun. Four long lonely years had past since her husband Ben had left her side and gone to war; the war which always tore families apart. Her frown changed into a grin, remembering the love they had shared on their wedding night; their only night. She hadn’t seen her husband since.

Kate wrote Ben every day. He had written back at first then the mail stopped. She put the reason down to the war.

She habitually twisted her wedding ring. She looked down, her smile fading. The ring had slipped off soon after her baby had been born. She searched for the ring for days to no avail.
