“Please don’t chew on If You Give a Pig a Pancake, sweetie.” Hannah Spenser knelt in front of the blond baby—maybe eighteen months old—and tugged the book from his gummy mouth. He grinned up at her, his big blue eyes twinkling.
Hannah couldn’t help but smile back. “Oh, you’re going to be a heartbreaker, I can tell.”
As she carefully dragged the book cover down her long denim skirt to rid it of the drool, she rose up to look around the children’s section. “Where’s your mama, huh?”
A sudden thought that he’d been abandoned popped into her head, and she couldn’t help the flicker of hope that popped up right alongside it. Perhaps social services would allow her to take him home since she’d found him? Adopt him? She was young—but not too young, made a decent living as a librarian, was a good person, and had no criminal record. Well, if you didn’t count the time she’d been taken to jail for chaining herself to the lobster tank at Kroger when she was twelve—but thankfully the store hadn’t pressed charges.
