THE GOOD SERVANTS

This book is dedicated to all the musicians it has given me so much pleasure to play with over the years, especially in Dublin, Zagreb and Cáceres.
I have a couple of quotes I’d like to begin with. Firstly, my favourite quote about writing, which comes from Gene Fowler (though sometimes attributed to Douglas Adams) and goes something like this, “Writing is easy, all you do is stare at a blank piece of paper until drops of blood appear on your forehead”. At the completion of this work I find that I can only agree with Mr Fowler. The second comes from José Martí, the Cuban revolutionary, who, when asked what things people should do before they die, replied “Plant a tree, write a book, have a son”.
