Still Air

Sean Monaghan

Ben Easton slipped from under the quilt. Andrea was still sleeping, hair awash across the pillow like spilled dark wine. He watched her sleep for a moment, trying to absorb her calm, before going to the curtains and looking through the gap. Nearly clear skies.

"More snow?" Andrea mumbled.

"Sunny," he said, still staring at the wispy, ice-laden clouds so high that they seemed motionless. Surely weather wouldn't close the airport again. The storm had abated overnight, but the news reports suggested a backlog of passengers. Cars had been slipping from the roadways, and these were Swedes, people who knew how to drive on roads with the grip of a skating rink. It was unseasonably early and that was the excuse they used, a block of supercooled air punching through from the Arctic. "Clear," he said, "though perhaps that's Denmark, where the sky is sunny."
