Chapter One

There was a predawn fog. The hollow ring of hooves echoed eerily up and down the deserted street. Cocooned in a world of murky white, Rachel couldn’t see any further than the tiny icicle on the end of her snub nose. It was an easy five minute loose-limbed walk from home to the track, each step and every breath a harmonious rhythm. It hadn’t always been so.
