"Say, you’re English, right?"
"Aw, what gave it away? My pasty complexion?"
She smiled a brilliant white smile and I returned it as best I could. I pulled away from the roadside, snatching a glance; she was slim and blonde, with those looks that only hours under the Californian sun can mould.
"You mind?" she asked, showing me a cigarette.
"No, go ahead. Just open a window, though."
