The Line of Duty

The tiny elderly woman sat down gingerly on the edge of the hard-backed chair in the center of the room. Regardless of how hard Ann Malkin tried to ignore the fact, her one hundred forty year old bones did not cooperate like they used to. "Katie, would you please hurry! We're going to be late for the ceremony!" Her strong yet raspy voice belied her age. "Who's the grandmother here anyway?" she muttered.

"I heard that," Katherine Orpik shot back from the bedroom where she was hastily donning her dress uniform. She was still straightening the blue tunic as she emerged, dark blue jacket over one arm. "And that would be both of us." She dropped a kiss on the older woman's forehead then zoomed to the large mahogany desk in one corner of the spacious room.
