“What do you dream of?”
The cold, crisp air scraped her throat raw with every inhalation, the wind both friend and foe tonight. It teased her with its icy breath and yet pulled back the curtain: the tapestry of stars winking encouragement to plunder truths from normally shy lips. The moss cradled her head, the lush grass cushioning her lanky limbs as comfortably as her bed. Squinting her eyes in concentration, she watched each twinkle in the sky; so close, so bright, all that she had to do was reach out and grab one, and grasp a piece of magic in her palm.
On childish instinct she reached out her hand, and for a moment brushed a star, brushed the impossible. Then she remembered where she was. A nervous snicker squeezed out between her lips: the realisation it was only air that caressed her fingers. Her hand fell back down to earth. Heat scorched her cheeks. The rustle of the leaves grew slightly louder, as if even nature laughed at her expense. Naomi’s entire body stilled its motion, humiliation paralysing both breath and thought. Only when her lungs begged for relief, her eyes watering from the effort to remain static, did the Faerie alongside her breathe a near silent sigh.
