Damn my wrists burned! It felt like they were bound by plasma instead of rope. I kept my jaw tightly clenched to avoid wincing or groaning at the intense pain. It didn't help being slung over someone's bony shoulder. Far more cynic than optimist, I'd never been particularly good at looking on the bright side. Still, I reminded myself sternly that the discomfort was preferable to numbness. It meant that I still had circulation and—when the opportunity for escape arose—that I would be able to fight. In theory.

At least that is what I kept telling myself.
