Cherry dark lipstick and a black halter top. That’s what Amaretta was wearing when she first came out on stage. Blonde hair was pulled back in a ponytail so it sprung up like chicken feathers. Wisps hung loose form it, obscuring her eyes. I could see her hand shaking as she reached for the mic, ragged fingernails from a bad habit. It wasn’t the only bad habit she had, but the others weren’t exactly the type worn on the skin, so to speak. Her head was bowed when she first stepped up, and as she lifted her head, the gauntness of her skin and the dusty traces of sleep deprivation were evident and a shock. It had only been a few weeks since he’d last seen her, but she had regressed terribly since then. The audience didn’t know her like he did. They probably couldn’t see the pain or direness of her state. It was not the signs in her he had hoped to see.
