3a.m., a dog was barking in the parking lot of the Motel 6. The noise wakened Bob from a light sleep. He had only slept a couple of hours, maybe a little more. Tension, nervous excitement, heat. Plain, humid, God-awful heat. He remembered that heat. It was one of the things from his childhood that he didn’t miss. It was hot in Kansas City in the summer with plenty of 100-degree days, but not like this. The overnight low was a couple of hours away, but that would only be 85 degrees and the humidity would also be in the mid to high 80s.
