Marcus sighed, shoving the box back into its place on the shelf. He glanced around the archives. “Are you sure you guys file these things correctly?”

“Yep.” Harold, the bookkeeper chuckled. “By last name.”

The detective just shook his head. Harold knew full well that Marcus didn’t enjoy smart aleck remarks. He squinted again at the labels on the different boxes. “You guys could do with bigger labels.” Even with his enhanced vision, the vampire was having problems. “There are no S names.”

“S?” Harold scratched his balding hairline. “Who are you looking for?”

“Cole Sanders. I talked to the Council. They said I could take his file, and make my own copy.”

“Oh him. No wonder you couldn’t find it down here. Those criminals are filed under a different system next door. They’re filed by crime first. What’s your interest in that one?”

“That’s personal.” Marcus replied. “Can you just show me where the room is? I don’t have a lot of time.” Marcus did have a lot of time. He just didn’t feel like playing twenty questions with the human.
